Behind the Leash
Basia Beska
Force-Free Dog Trainer
Welcome! I'm Basia Beska, a passionate positive reinforcement dog trainer based in Edinburgh. My lifelong love for animals began with family pets, including dachshunds, and extended to exotic animals like African Pygmy Hedgehogs. Growing up with dogs, I developed a deep understanding of their needs and behaviour.
Studying psychology at Heriot-Watt University gave me a unique foundation — a genuine understanding of how both animals and humans learn, think, and respond to their environment. This academic grounding shapes everything I do, from how I read a dog's body language to how I support owners through the emotional challenges of behavioural change.
Adopting Cuddy, a rescue dog from Cyprus, who magically appeared in my neighbours garden one day and absolutely stole my heart, was a pivotal moment in my journey. Her transformation — from a concerned and ‘I don’t know how to be a dog’ stray to a confident, loving companion — deepened my passion for rehabilitation and behaviour work, and reinforced everything I believe about the power of patience, trust, and positive reinforcement.
Today, my mission is simple: to help dog owners in Edinburgh build a relationship with their dog based on understanding, kindness, and clear communication — creating lasting change that makes life better for both ends of the lead.

🎓 BSc in Psychology — Heriot-Watt University
My formal foundation. Studying psychology gave me a deep understanding of learning theory, behaviour, and — crucially — the human side of the equation. Because helping your dog often means helping you too.

I'm developing my practice under the wing of the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants — one of the most respected bodies in the world for evidence-based behaviour work. This means I'm held to a professional Code of Ethics and am continuously building toward formal behaviour consultant certification.
What to I base my practice on?
🔬 Functional Analysis Before I address any behaviour, I ask why. The same behaviour in two different dogs can have completely different causes — and therefore needs completely different solutions. Whether your dog is reactive, fearful, or struggling with a complex behaviour issue, understanding the function behind it is always my first step.
⚖️ LIMA & the Humane Hierarchy I work within the Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive (LIMA) framework and follow Dr Susan Friedman's Humane Hierarchy — a structured ethical decision-making process that ensures the gentlest effective approach is always chosen first. No shortcuts. No aversives. Ever.
🐕 Desensitisation & Counter-Conditioning (DS/CC) The gold standard for working with fearful and reactive dogs. Rather than suppressing fear responses, DS/CC works to genuinely change how a dog feels about their triggers — building lasting emotional resilience from the inside out.
🧭 Ethological Approach Dogs are not broken humans — they are a species with their own evolutionary history, instincts, and communication system. I look at the whole dog — their breed heritage, their natural drives, their behavioural needs — and work with their instincts rather than against them. A dog whose needs are genuinely met is a dog who is ready to learn.
🤝 Consent-Based Training I believe dogs should be willing participants in their own learning, not just compliant ones. Building in choice and agency creates genuine trust — and a dog that wants to engage with you is a far more reliable companion than one that simply tolerates training.
🐾 Pet First Aid Certified Your dog's safety and wellbeing is my priority in every session.
📚 Continuing Professional Development The science of animal behaviour is constantly evolving — and so am I. I regularly engage with current research, attend professional development webinars, and pursue self-directed learning to ensure my practice always reflects the latest evidence. Because my dogs deserve nothing less, and neither do yours.
"Dogs do speak, but only to those who know how to listen."
~ Orhan Pamuk
What to expect
Full Support - Zero Judgment
Finding the right dog trainer in Edinburgh can feel overwhelming — especially when you're dealing with a dog whose behaviour feels unpredictable or hard to manage. My approach to 1-2-1 dog training, whether in person in Edinburgh or online, is built on empathy, kindness, and understanding — no judgment, only support. Every dog is different, every owner is different, and you deserve a training experience that feels safe, encouraging, and genuinely tailored to you both.
Building Behaviours with Kindness
As a force-free dog behaviour consultant, I use a fully science-based approach — building behaviours your dog genuinely wants to perform, rather than ones they simply comply without pressure. Whether you're working through reactive dog behaviour, fear, or everyday training challenges, sessions are always positive, always kind, and always focused on what works for your dog.
No Shortcuts - Smart Solutions
Reactive dog training and complex behaviour problems deserve thoughtful solutions, not quick fixes. Every 1-2-1 behaviour consultation — available in person in Edinburgh and online world-wide (polish speakers welcome)— starts with understanding what's really going on for your dog. Because the right approach for your dog is always better than a generic one. Real, lasting change takes time, patience, and a plan built around your individual needs.
